Ten statements

How your organization runs today

Score what happens on an ordinary Tuesday, not what is supposed to happen. Your first honest response is usually the useful one.

As you answer

  • Score what happens on an ordinary Tuesday, not what is supposed to happen.
  • Your first honest response is usually the useful one. Do not debate long.
  • Notice which of your own whys each statement stirs up. Carry those into Chapter 1.
  • Choose how the behavior is held, not merely whether it shows up.
  • This is the only unguarded reading you will get before the book changes what you notice.
  • The book cannot give you specific context. That comes from you.

Chapter 1

When we make a significant hire or promotion, a specific system (not someone's good intentions) protects the behavior that pay assumes after the offer is signed.

Why this matters

Compensation assumes certain behavior on day one. If nothing in the environment holds that behavior, the organization pays twice: once at hire, again at repair.
